🎉 Campaign Update: Success on Voter ID and other electoral
reforms
Hi John,
The Government has just announced a wide-range of reforms to
electoral laws, and I wanted to thank you, John, for
being on this journey with us.
What have the government announced?
-
Voter ID to be extended to include bank cards to help more people exercise their democratic right
- Tougher new rules to guard against foreign
political interference and abuse of campaigners
- Modernisation of UK democracy will see 16
and 17-year-olds able to vote in next general
election
Progress in politics is often slow; Best for Britain has been
campaigning against exclusionary voter ID rules since the
Conservatives proposed it in September 2021. And the rest of the
Elections Act that made it easier to funnel money into UK politics
through a Limited Company.

Thanks to our supporters, 3,000
people sent evidence to a (highly unpublicised) consultation run
by the Department of Levelling Up in June 2023, which put indisputable
evidence of how many people were being denied their right to vote at
the polling station.
And even more of you have continued to write to your MP to keep
this issue at the top of the agenda when the government extended the
list of acceptable ID to Veteran Cards.

Persistance pays off. Will you stay on this journey with us?
It often takes several years for our demands to become law. But
slowly and surely, Best for Britain, thanks to you John, has helped
🗳️ protect our democracy in the face of constant
attacks, 🧍♀️🧍♂️ extend franchise to more voters -
such as those living in the EU for over 15 years, and
🇪🇺 repair our relationship with Europe (72 out of 114
demands still to go!)
Organising actions - like the mass participation in the Voter ID
consultation, speaking to voters, persuading
politicians, and running campaigns in the UK
and across Europe, is all funded by people like
you.
Will you consider a regular gift of £3
per month?
|
Every penny raised goes to fixing our relationship with Europe,
mending our democracy, and fighting against those on the extreme right
who take all this away from us.

Naomi Smith, Chief Executive of Best
for Britain, said:
“Best for Britain has long championed a fairer, more inclusive
voter ID system and we wholeheartedly welcome this decision. Our
democracy is precious and these vital changes will enable more of us
to have a say in the future of our country, while ensuring malign
foreign actors face stronger barriers to threatening the sanctity of
the polling booth.
“It’s also vital that political parties do much more to win the
votes of the UK’s young people whose interests and futures are too
often neglected in a system prioritising their grandparents. This is a
brave choice set to benefit generations to
come.”
|
In the middle of such geopolitical turmoil it can be easy to brush
electoral reform, like the measures announced today, aside as less
important. But we can't take our eye off matters - both huge and small
- that are eroding the very idea of democracy.
I know that you care about protecting it as much as I do, and so
I'm thankful for any support
you can give.
Yours,
Tom
