This is what a fossil fuel bailout looks like in 2025:
Over the past few months, Trump’s Department of Energy has quietly started issuing orders under an obscure provision in law (Section 202(c) of the Federal Power Act for those of you who are policy wonks like we are) to force aging, polluting coal-powered plants to stay online long past their expiration dates. This provision in law was intended for real and acute power emergencies, not a tool to support Trump’s obsession with coal.
Now, they’re laying the groundwork to expand this costly, dangerous overreach. Let’s be clear: these plants emit millions of pounds of climate and health-harming pollution every single year. And what’s more, keeping them running means higher electricity prices for families already struggling with rising costs.
It’s past time to modernize the grid, accelerate the clean energy transition, and make sure working families benefit from lower bills and cleaner air. That future is well within reach, as exemplified by countries like Germany and China that are already implementing clean energy policies and reaping the benefits of their investments. What we need here in the United States is to build the political will to get there.
Thanks to your help in 2024, SEEC PAC was able to re-elect over 95% of our pro-environment members to the U.S. House of Representatives — defying the odds on a night where Democrats lost seats. Now we are counting on you to help our SEEC members pass climate, clean energy and environmental justice policies in the 119th Congress while we continue fighting for a sustainable future. But if you'd like to receive fewer emails, we understand. You can click here to only get our most important messages, or you can unsubscribe.
