There’s no ensuring fair maps without protecting equal access to the ballot box. But one of the tools created to advance and defend the voting rights of Black and Brown communities is under attack.

The Voting Rights Act of 1965 (VRA) was a landmark legislation that finally created a robust safeguard against discrimination and disenfranchisement in our elections and established strong tools to deliver on the promise of fair representation with fair district lines.

For decades, the Voting Rights Act made a measurable impact in protecting the voting power of marginalized voters.

But all that changed with the Supreme Court’s disastrous decision in Shelby County. The Court’s ruling gutted Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act, taking away key protections and making it easier for states to discriminate against voters of color.

Since then, anti-democracy forces have used and abused the courts, bringing case after case to advance a dangerous agenda that threatens the ability of certain voters to make their voices heard — and undermines the very foundations of our democracy.

As you read this, ongoing cases in Alabama, Georgia, and Louisiana are taking aim at other sections of the VRA, threatening to deprive voters of the chance to elect leaders who truly represent them.

Throughout these attacks on the Voting Rights Act, All On the Line has been there every step of the way, working tirelessly to defend voting rights and fair representation across the country.
