We just returned to Vera Goat Dairy—the 9,000-goat operation in California’s Central Valley where DxE investigators recently exposed disturbing, illegal conditions ( [link removed] ) and rescued 5 suffering goats. Vera supplies the nation’s largest goat milk brand, Meyenberg, which is sold at Whole Foods and other national retailers with a misleading “Certified Humane” label that they pay to use. DxE’s investigation documented *sick and emaciated goats, mother goats with painfully swollen, infected udders, and dozens of dead animals left in open piles* , with dogs feeding on the carcasses.

Yesterday, dozens of DxE activists gathered at the Kings County District Attorney’s Office to once again urge the DA to prosecute the documented animal cruelty at Vera Goat Dairy. Many others called the DA’s office, keeping the phone ringing all day long. Some of the activists who were arrested after rescuing sick goats from Vera’s abuse spoke to the authorities at length about the conditions they have seen firsthand inside the factory farm.

After speaking out at the DA’s office and the Sheriff’s office, we traveled to Vera Goat Dairy to hold a peaceful vigil and bear witness to the thousands of animals still trapped inside. One activist played music and sang some beautiful songs. The goats watched us, stretching their necks over their fences and listening to the music curiously.

Seeing these animals locked in barren pens in the 100+ degree heat was definitely heartbreaking — but we refuse to look away. We refuse to simply wait for someone else to do something. Instead of waiting for change — we’re actively creating it. For the rescued goats, Phoebe, Celia, Castiel, Sarah, and Sarah’s little one Johnny, we have already changed the entire world. And we must keep fighting to create a world where all these animals are protected.
