A violent ICE raid on a California farm late last week killed one farmworker.¹ The surrounding communities responded with protests against the out-of-control ICE. The Department of Homeland Security took no responsibility for the deadly raid.

Trump said ICE should use “whatever means is necessary” to arrest demonstrators who oppose his mass deportations. He even deployed the National Guard to quash the protests.² “We really feel like we’re being hunted, we’re being hunted like animals,” said one undocumented worker in southern California interviewed by The Guardian.³

As long as Trump’s masked ICE agents continue violent raids on farms, construction sites, schools, homes, and communities across the country, no one is safe. Our leaders in the House and Senate must use their power to halt the terror of mass deportations.

The president of the United Farmworkers said, “These violent and cruel federal actions terrorize American communities, disrupt the American food supply chain, threaten lives and separate families.”⁴

Trump’s mass deportations have put millions of people under constant threat. “You can’t go out peacefully to do things, or go to work with any peace of mind anymore,” an undocumented worker from southern California said. “We’re stressed out and our kids are stressed out. No one is the same since these raids started.”⁵

This is what happens under authoritarian regimes. Trump’s violent roundup of immigrants, his masked ICE agents, and his defiance of court orders to halt deportations are a danger to our democracy and every community in America. Congress must use every tool it has to stop these vicious raids.
