Dear John,
The final deadline to pass Donald Trump’s huge $1.1 billion funding cut for public radio and television is
this Friday, and Trump still doesn’t have the votes he needs to push these devastating cuts through.
If we can keep up the pressure for just a couple more days, public broadcasting will be saved.
But make no mistake: This is the make-or-break moment for public radio and television. Nearly one in every five public radio stations could be forced to shut down if federal funding is eliminated, and 30 percent of current listeners could lose access.
So we need your help to ramp up our efforts to sound the alarm to our ten million followers across social media and help flood key Senate offices with phone calls.
Will you rush an urgent donation right now to help educate the public and stop Donald Trump’s plan to defund public media?
I simply cannot overstate how destructive these cuts would be. Local stations are describing them as a “death sentence” and a “crisis.”
But for Trump, this is all about silencing the free press and attacking any news outlet that dares to hold him accountable.
In addition to gutting public broadcasting, Trump’s rescissions package would also slash more than $9 billion in life-saving foreign aid, including defunding PEPFAR, the global AIDS prevention program.
The senseless cruelty of these cuts is appalling.
But I truly believe we can stop these cuts if we keep up the pressure, because public broadcasting enjoys such wide public support in red states as well as blue. So with the final vote approaching as soon as today, we’re ramping up the pressure to help convince the four Republicans we need to vote no and save public broadcasting.
Will you make a donation to help get out the truth and fight the defunding of public broadcasting?
Thank you,
Robert Reich
