Dear Friend,
In the newsletter this week
* Were the Red Arrows being ‘woke’ at Glastonbury?
* No, that viral flood video isn’t from Texas
* Old crash footage falsely linked to Diogo Jota’s death
* Government Tracker
* Also this week...
But first....
Last week, defence secretary John Healey said the government had deported 30,000 people in the past year.
That’s not quite right.
How we know
Government figures do show that nearly 30,000 people have been returned, but this includes both enforced and voluntary returns, and not all of them meet the official definition of a “deportation”.

Why words matter
Some might say this is a small detail. But when politicians talk about immigration, it’s important they use the right words.
“Deported” has a specific legal definition and means someone was forced to leave because they had committed a crime or for the public good.

The full picture
We know that just over 26% were enforced returns, the category that includes deportations, meaning the majority of these returns were not technically deportations.
We’ve asked Mr Healey to correct his statement.
We’re waiting to hear back from him.
Best wishes,
Craig

Some people online have claimed the Red Arrows used white smoke at Glastonbury to avoid causing offence.
The RAF says the jets had used coloured smoke earlier in the day at other shows. When they flew over Glastonbury, they were on their way to Bournemouth to get ready for more displays.
Jets only carry a small amount of red and blue dye, so they use white smoke during these repositioning flights.
The RAF confirmed this was standard practice.

A viral video compilation shared with claims it shows flash floods in Brenham, Texas in May is misleading.
None of the six clips were filmed there. They come from past floods in India, Spain, France and possibly Japan. Some clips were flipped or edited.

A video claiming to show the crash that killed Diogo Jota and his brother actually shows a 2023 accident in the US. The real crash happened in Spain and involved a different type of car.
This kind of miscaptioned video often spreads after major news events.
