Marking a milestone moment in collaborative conservation

As dappled sunlight streams through expansive bamboo forests, giant pandas Xin Bao and Yun Chuan awaken to explore their lush surroundings. Xin Bao ambles up a hill to explore a stand of bamboo while Yun Chuan deftly climbs up a tree, pausing to take in the sky-high view. While the curious bears’ many adventures at the San Diego Zoo’s Denny Sanford Panda Ridge are inspiring to observe, it’s what isn’t visible that’s most interesting.
Not long ago, giant pandas’ future was uncertain and extinction appeared imminent. To help secure a future for the species, we began a groundbreaking collaboration with our conservation partners in China. Over 30 years, we’ve advanced conservation science, wildlife health, and care, increasing populations and our understanding of what pandas need to thrive in native habitats. While giant pandas’ status has positively changed from endangered to vulnerable, many challenges still lie ahead.
On California Panda Day, August 8, we’re marking the first anniversary of Panda Ridge and a new chapter in our collaborative conservation. Your support makes it possible to collaborate on this vital work through our Asia Conservation Hub, inspiring others to join us in saving, protecting, and caring for pandas and their bamboo forest ecosystems.

BAMBOO FOR BEARS
Like all pandas, Xin Bao and Yun Chuan spend up to 12 hours a day eating just one thing—bamboo. The San Diego Zoo and San Diego Zoo Safari Park grow six acres of it to help ensure they thrive, and our nutrition, horticulture, browse, and wildlife care teams work together to provide each bear with about 100 pounds daily.

DAYS OF WILDLIFE WONDER
Your support helps save wildlife, and now you can discover even more about some of the world’s most fascinating species in new ways. Discover one of the only egg-laying mammals on World Echidna Day, July 19, and earn your stripes in carnivore lore on International Tiger Day, July 29—all at the Safari Park. Engage with experts, find out how your support fuels conservation work in our eight Conservation Hubs, and keep an eye out for wildlife talks and other fun activities.

SAVING THREATENED OAKS
Mighty as they may seem, one third of all oak species are threatened with extinction. While their acorns can’t successfully be preserved in seed banks, our Wildlife Biodiversity Bank’s Frozen Zoo® has achieved a milestone—banking its first plant, the endangered Nuttall’s scrub oak, to safeguard the species’ genetic diversity. You’re helping ensure the future for threatened California oaks and wildlife worldwide.
