I’ve been to Ukraine four times with Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF). Often, my colleagues and I were based close to the front lines, facing some of the most dangerous moments of the war—exposed to drone attacks, bombs, and missile strikes.

That’s because the front lines of war are where medical needs are clearest and most urgent—and because these are the areas where few, if any, other aid groups are going.

That’s the reality of MSF’s work: We go where others can’t. We’re treating adults and children with injuries from shrapnel, blasts, and gunfire. In places where hospitals have been bombed, health systems have collapsed, and access to care is nearly impossible, MSF staff are there providing lifesaving care.

Thanks to generous support from independent donors, MSF teams have been able to deliver humanitarian aid and urgent medical care whenever and wherever it’s needed most. My colleagues in Ukraine, Sudan, Democratic Republic of Congo, and around the world are working under fire, through evacuations, and under threat—yet they keep going. But we can’t do it without you.

Today, in addition to the threats and attacks on health care that our teams are experiencing, we are also facing a catastrophic new challenge: Devastating US government cuts to international aid. In many places, these cuts will effectively be a death sentence for some of the world’s most vulnerable people.
