John,
A key committee has scheduled a vote for THIS THURSDAY to move forward the EARN IT Act—the bill that would essentially let the government monitor everything we do on our phones and computers, whether we’re at a protest or just messaging with friends.1
We’re launching our campaign to stop this bill from moving forward, but we need your help. THIS IS URGENT: Can you chip in right now to block the EARN IT Act and protect our personal communications?
DONATE
The EARN IT Act would give the Department of Justice (aka Trump’s attorney general Bill Barr, and whoever replaces him in the next administration) the ability to force companies to break their own encryption in order to allow government surveillance.2 And it would let the government silence dissent too, by messing with Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act to give the Executive Branch the power to dictate what types of content websites are allowed to host.
We’ve already sent more than 600,000 petition signatures to Congress from people who oppose this sneak attack on Internet freedom and privacy.
But we have plans to do more. We’re getting ready to:
-
Launch a website to send out widely to help people take action
-
Set up our call tool to help hundreds of people call the Senators on the committee considering the EARN IT Act and tell them to vote against this bill
-
Contacting our coalition of organizations and businesses to help put the full-court press against this bill into action
-
Send out texts and emails to hundreds of thousands of our supporters (like you) to contact Congress and take action
We know these grassroots actions make a difference and that we can stop this bill from moving. But building websites, connecting calls, and sending texts cost money. How much we can do depends on your support. You can help make sure the EARN IT Act loses this critical vote by making a donation right now—whether it’s $5, $50, $500 or more, every donation will help us reach more people and drive more actions to Congress.
Let’s do this!
