After mounting pressure from Donald Trump, Governor Abbott just announced plans for a rare mid-decade redraw of the Texas congressional map.

Make no mistake: This is just another right-wing tactic to cling to their slim, unearned majority in the House of Representatives and steal the midterm elections. Republicans know their policies are unpopular, so they’re using every tactic they’ve got to suppress our voices — including extreme gerrymandering.

The NDRC is committed to pushing back against this anti-democracy attack to ensure Texas maps are fair and its elections reflect the will of the people. But we need the full strength of this grassroots movement behind us.

Republicans in Texas are attempting to steal the midterm elections and secure illegitimate power for themselves by drawing an even MORE gerrymandered map. And they are doing so at a time of tragedy when they should be focused on their constituents. Shameful.

Let’s be clear: Texas’ congressional map already favors Republicans. They are seizing an opportunity to manipulate maps even further in a blatant power grab. We can’t let them get away with this attempt to lock in a partisan advantage in the middle of a crisis.
