All students deserve to feel safe to be themselves in their school communities. However, the sad reality is that, still, too many queer and trans students face the fear of discrimination and exclusion.
From attacks on pronoun usage to hallway bullying and harassment, queer and trans youth and young people are finding themselves at the centre of anti-2SLGBTQI hate.
Egale’s national Still in Every Class in Every School report found that: - 62% of 2SLGBTQ students feel unsafe at school, compared to 11% of cisgender heterosexual students.
- 64% of all participants reported hearing homophobic comments daily or weekly at school.
- 57% of trans respondents had been targets of mean rumours or lies.
Egale is working alongside school boards, educators, administrators, and legal advocates to ensure 2SLGBTQI students have the support they need and the protection they deserve.
