WorkWorkNVIDIA says it can resume selling key AI chips to China Yesterday, NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang dismissed concerns that China's military would use the company's chips to develop AI. "They don't need NVIDIA's chips, certainly, or American tech stacks in order to build their military," he said, adding that it would be foolish of them to do so because "they simply can't rely on it." Huang has previously said that NVIDIA export bans didn't stop China from developing AI and allowed its competitors, especially Huawei, to gain ground on US technology. WorkWork

Find Cures for Untreatable Diseases - Using Drugs We Already Have? - The New Yorker (No paywall) When David Fajgenbaum was a twenty-five-year-old medical student, at the University of Pennsylvania, he started to feel so tired that he could barely stand. Fajgenbaum, a former college quarterback, could still bench-press three hundred and seventy-five pounds; he was known for doing pullups on a tree near his workplace. But now he was desperately ill. The lymph nodes in his groin and neck swelled. Small red dotsblood molesemerged on his chest, and he woke up soaked in sweat. One day, at the hospital where he was doing his rotation, he stumbled down the hall into the emergency room, and doctors told him that his liver, bone marrow, and kidneys were failing. Fluid had leaked out of his blood vessels, into his abdomen and around his heart; bleeding in his retina temporarily blinded him in his left eye. Fajgenbaum was admitted to the I.C.U. and given enormous doses of steroids to try to quell runaway inflammation. It took him a month to recover enough to leave the hospital. Work

Amazon's Zoox is also still out there, despite a serious software issue that impacted the braking system. WorkWorkWork
WorkTrump's New Hard Line on Putin is Softer Than it Looks Both of the warring sides in Ukraine had reason to feel relieved on Monday when President Donald Trump announced his latest plan for peace. For the Ukrainians, the proposal included an influx of desperately needed American weapons, which will help shield civilians from Russian bombs and rearm the Ukrainian military. For the Russians, the plan left plenty of room to maneuver, and did not impose nearly as much pain as many in Moscow had feared. WorkWorkApple commits $500 million over several years to buy US-made rare earth magnets Apple basically pioneered the use of recycled rare earth elements in consumer electronics. It began using these materials back in 2019, in the Taptic Engine of the iPhone 11. WorkAI is killing the web. Can anything save it? - The Economist (No paywall) Around the beginning of last year, Matthew Prince started receiving worried calls from the chief executives of large media companies. A press release says the move will “broaden” the Department of Defense’s use of AI to “address critical national security needs.” This initiative aims to expand the Department of Defense’s AI use for national security. Notably, xAI’s receipt of funds coincides with its new version of Grok, made for federal use. WorkFree-market economics is working surprisingly well One area of seeming bipartisan consensus in America over the past decade is the idea that free-market economics or neoliberalism has failed, and that our economic system needs to be overhauled. Leftists have always believed this, of course, and in recent years theyve been joined by more mainstream progressives like the folks at the Hewlett Foundation. On the right, thanks to Trump, tariffs and immigration restriction have overthrown free trade as the reigning orthodoxy. And the GOP in general seems to want to put their thumb on the scale for fossil fuel industries and other traditional sectors.
