Donald Trump has nominated Jeanine Pirro to be the U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia – and the Senate Judiciary Committee is preparing to vote this week on her nomination.
This is one of the most critical prosecutorial posts in the country. The D.C. U.S. Attorney’s Office handled the most high-profile January 6th prosecutions, including against the Proud Boys and other violent extremists.
But Pirro has made a name for herself by undermining those prosecutions and attacking the very people who carried them out.
❌ She called January 6th defendants “hostages.”
❌ She claimed they were jailed “based upon their political beliefs.”
❌ She even endorsed criminal investigations into the DOJ prosecutors who secured convictions – including staff in the office she now leads.

Jeanine Pirro has spent years using her media platform to promote conspiracy theories, attack DOJ prosecutors, and excuse the January 6th attack on the U.S. Capitol. She amplified false claims about the 2020 election, defended Trump’s sweeping pardons for rioters, and dismissed the violence on January 6th as a partisan “narrative.” That’s not the record of someone who should be trusted to lead the most politically sensitive prosecutions in the country.
She defended Enrique Tarrio – the Proud Boys leader sentenced to 22 years in prison for seditious conspiracy – by dismissing his conviction because he wasn’t physically present at the Capitol. But she ignored the fact that Tarrio was convicted for organizing and directing the attack.
And she didn’t just defend Trump’s sweeping January 6th pardons. She actively promoted baseless claims that Dominion voting machines flipped votes from Trump to Biden – a claim so false and inflammatory that it led to a $787 million defamation settlement with Fox News, where Pirro hosted a show.
Her own producer said her script was “so alarming” and “rife with conspiracy theories and BS” that he warned executives she should never be on live television.

Republican Senator Thom Tillis – who serves on the Judiciary Committee – said he won’t support any nominee who excused January 6th. He already rejected Trump’s previous pick, Ed Martin, on those exact grounds. He needs to stay true to his word.
Pirro’s public record is full of excuses for January 6th. If the Senate applies the same standard here, they must reject her too.
We can’t let someone who undermined the rule of law direct prosecutions in the very district where January 6th happened.
