Protecting Your Pocketbook and the Services Residents Rely On

Dear residents,

Each year, one of my most important responsibilities as your Mayor is to propose a County budget that reflects the needs of our community, with accountable, fiscally responsible leadership.

That means building a stronger, more secure Miami-Dade for tomorrow – delivering essential services efficiently and spending every single taxpayer dollar wisely.

Each year, we have balanced our budget and worked hard to build a government that delivers efficient, effective services that residents need to thrive. Together, we have made historic investments to tackle the affordability crisis, grow our economy, and make our community one of the safest in the nation. And we did all this while cutting the tax rate two years in a row, bringing the combined tax rate to the lowest level since 1982.

But today, we are confronting a new and difficult fiscal reality. We face a historic budget gap, nearly half of it driven by the required expansion of our county government through five new independent constitutional offices – an unfunded state mandate that we now must balance. At the same time, we are experiencing losses in state and federal revenue, rising costs, and increased demand for our services – all in one fiscal year. This truly is a perfect storm, and to close the gap, we had to make some difficult choices.

With my WISE305 initiative as our blueprint, we have taken steps to streamline County government without sacrificing service:

  • Workplace Initiatives: Streamlining departmental budgets, reducing executive pay, and optimizing county assets to generate revenue
  • Investments in Tech: Investing in technology to provide more efficient and streamlined services
  • Savings for Businesses and Residents: Consolidating multiple departments to eliminate duplication, streamline services and increase collaboration
  • Efficiency Review: Reviewing all outdated policies to ensure we are working smarter

Above all, my proposed budget protects the core services that you rely on every day like public safety, transportation, water, trash, and our world-class libraries –while maintaining our historically low tax rate. Your trash will still be picked up, your buses and trains will run on the same schedule, your water will still be among the safest and cleanest in the country, and we will continue to invest in public safety just as we have every year of my administration.

I’ve always believed that government must be transparent, accountable, and grounded in the real lives of the people we serve. Community engagement continues to be a pillar of my administration, and I need your input.

So I invite you to stay engaged. Come to our public meetings, learn more about what’s in the budget, and tell us what matters most to you – because every choice we make is a reflection of our shared priorities as a community. Learn more and stay tuned for details on our budget town halls in coming days: https://miamidade.gov/budget.

Together, let’s continue building a Miami-Dade that works for everyone.

Yours in service,

Mayor Daniella
