John,
Today (and every day) we are celebrating Ms. Elaine Brown, former Chairwoman of the Black Panther Party. Her revolutionary love and spirit of relentless struggle inspire the work that we do today, and she is one of the fierce elders that we look to for guidance and inspiration.
Since 1968, Elaine’s mission has never wavered: liberation, justice, and Black self-determination. Period!
From organizing the Panthers' free breakfast program to establishing community schools and confronting systemic racism head-on, the fight for Black flourishing remains as urgent as ever. Today, our community continues to face relentless attacks. We’re enduring the highest rates of poverty, homelessness, incarceration, and systemic violence.
But revolutionaries never wait; we build. We don’t depend on a leader or a government to be on our side. Abolition pushes for what’s necessary, regardless of whether the establishment thinks it practical.
That’s why we partnered with Elaine’s organization, Oakland & The World Enterprises, to build The Black Panther complex. We've reclaimed a piece of West Oakland, building 100% affordable housing for 79 families — primarily single mothers and their children who previously faced houselessness.
Over 7,000 people applied for housing, underscoring the dire need for more projects like this. But that’s just the beginning of what makes The Black Panther complex so special. The building also houses community-led businesses employing formerly incarcerated people, reclaiming economic power and independence.
The city has officially recognized our revolutionary work by renaming the intersection at 7th and Campbell Streets "Elaine Brown Way."
This honor belongs to every revolutionary, every Panther, and every comrade who has dedicated their lives to our collective liberation.
We're building Black community wealth and infrastructure from the ground up. But we can't sustain this fight without your solidarity and support.
Stand with us. Invest in revolutionary action by splitting a contribution between Black Lives Matter and Oakland & The World Enterprises today.
Congratulations again, Ms. Elaine Brown, on this incredible honor!
With revolutionary love and steadfast commitment,
Team Black Lives Matter 🖤
Our grassroots movement is pushing for Black liberation every single day. We are striving to create a world where Black people do so much more than just survive. It’s time we thrive.
As an organization one of our biggest hurdles is consistency.
A recurring contribution of anything you can afford goes a long way as we plan for the months, years, and even decades ahead. This is the most effective way for small-dollar donors (like you) to power our Black liberation work.
Will you make a recurring contribution of $5 or more today so that we can keep building momentum for our movement?
