Dear PFAW Member,
For the first time in decades, the House of Representatives is expected to vote THIS FRIDAY on making the District of Columbia the 51st state.
Washington, D.C. is home to 700,000 people – a larger population than both Wyoming and Vermont. Yet D.C.’s residents remain disenfranchised with no voting representation in Congress.
D.C. also lacks crucial autonomy on many local issues. Locally-passed policies on everything from school funding and infrastructure to LGBTQ equality and reproductive freedom are subject to being overruled by Congress.
It’s an egregious injustice and a pressing issue of civil rights and racial justice. The District’s population is historically majority Black and currently is majority Black, Latinx, and Asian.
D.C. residents bear all the responsibilities of full U.S. citizenship—they pay taxes, serve on juries, serve in the military, and work hard to build safe, strong communities.
And just like citizens in the 50 states, they deserve a vote.
