Dear John,

The Minnesota Department of Education (MDE) recently released its second draft of new Health Education Standards. Many topics fall under the umbrella of Health education, such as CPR and AED instruction, nutrition, and substance abuse, but the outsized focus of the proposed benchmarks on sexual health, a consent-based sex education model, and instruction on "gender identity and expression" creates serious concern for Minnesota Family Council and True North Legal.

The Sexual Health portion includes required student learning expectations that violate related laws and are developmentally inappropriate. The Minnesota public has until July 18 (Friday!) to review proposed standards and the benchmarks to achieve those standards, submitting your comments which the Department will review.

Tell MDE: Revise Inappropriate & Inaccurate Sex Ed

Here are just a few examples of concerning proposed benchmarks which would become required instruction in health (quotations added):

  • 3rd grade: Describe consent and its importance in all relationships
  • 3rd grade: Define "gender identity" and "expression"
  • 3rd grade: explain the difference between “sex assigned at birth” and “gender identity” and “expression”
  • 5th grade: define “sexual orientation” including sense of identity, attractions, and behaviors
  • 5th grade: describe prejudice, discrimination, and bias (this instruction does not qualify as "Health")
  • 6th-8th grade: explain the qualities of a healthy dating or sexual relationship
  • 6th-8th grade: define how to communicate consent for all healthy behaviors
