Costa Rican Indigenous Peoples Hold First National Indigenous Congress in San Jose
On August 8-10, 2019, Indigenous leaders held the first National Indigenous Congress in San Antonio de Belen outside San Jose, Costa Rica, where seven of the eight Costa Rican Indigenous Nations met to discuss the challenges they face in the country. World Indigenous Peoples' Day Observed in Protests in the Streets of Nepal
On August 9, 2019, Indigenous Peoples observed the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples with gusto and fanfare around the globe. Meanwhile in Nepal, putting a halt to a 24-year-long practice of ceremonial traditions of celebrating the day, Indigenous people this year observed in the streets as part of their ongoing protest against the government’s move to slash civil service reservation quotas legally preserved for marginalized communities. First Communications Workshop Takes Place in Nebaj-Quiche
Association Q'imb'al promotes the empowerment of Ixile women. They have held workshops about starting a community radio station and upon learning about Cultural Survival’s Community Media Grant Project, they decided to apply. On August 8- 9, 2019, in Nebaj-Quiche, the Women’s Association Q'imb'al, the University Ixil, Fundamaya, Q'asabyol, Red Laval Iq', with the support of Cultural Survival and WAAC, hosted the first workshop to learn about and analyze the media landscape in Guatemala. Report on Mexico’s Indigenous Rights Record Presented to CERD
During the month of July 2019, a report on Mexico's Indigenous rights record was submitted to the United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (CERD). Twelve organizations that work on issues of human rights, legal assistance, migration, Indigenous Peoples, development and research collaborated to prepare this report. Each of the co-authors provided a series of case studies in Mexico and made recommendations to solve each issue. Read more. En Español.

Community Media Grant Partner
Radio Muk’ul Lum, Oxchuc, Chiapas, Mexcio
Radio Muk’ul Lum was intended to be a community radio station governed under the principle of equity. Women’s participation has increased thanks to an open call made by the station. Five women volunteers began to have a presence at the station. Through an internal training process, they developed their own capabilities, delving into issues related to Tzeltal community life, and became involved in decision-making processes. Read more. The Fellowship Project supports young Indigenous leaders between the ages of 16-26 who are committed and eager to learn about technology, program development, journalism, community radio, media, and Indigenous Peoples’ rights advocacy. The Julian Cho Society is a nongovernmental organization in southern Belize, devoted to Indigenous rights through research, education, and advocacy in southern Belize. Maya youth organizers organized the Sounding of the Conch Shell Youth Camp for youth to regain their traditional knowledge and build their leadership capacities. Read more.
