History does not repeat itself, but it often rhymes. Mark Twain’s words are more than a hundred years old and are ringing in my head just the same.

Consider our Declaration of Independence, the 249-year-old document we celebrated on the 4th of July. You’re no doubt familiar with the assertion that “all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness.”

In the Declaration, the American colonists made their case for their independence with a public list of 27 grievances against the King of England. Some of them sound very familiar: * “He has obstructed the Administration of Justice.”

* “He has… sent hither swarms of Officers to harass our people.”

* "He has excited domestic insurrections amongst us ..."
*
* "For imposing Taxes on us without our Consent ..."
*
* “For transporting us beyond Seas to be tried for pretended offences.”

I don't know about you, but I hear an awful lot of rhyming. Many of our Founding Fathers’ grievances against the King apply to our current president. That’s the truth of this moment in history, and it’s our responsibility to meet it.

And to really meet this moment, that means we need to raise money. My team and I kept our campaign offices open after the November elections — because, frankly, we’re in a democratic emergency.
