These are just a few of the mass shootings that have happened in June within the past five years. I highlight June because this month is also gun violence awareness month — a time for us to recommit to the work of ending the scourge of gun violence.
It is particularly important right now that we also remember that gun violence disproportionately impacts Black and Brown communities. The fight to end the gun violence epidemic in this country cannot be separated from our efforts to dismantle systemic racism and white supremacy.
Countless lives have been lost to senseless violence because Republicans put the interests of gun manufacturers over people.
The NRA has spent millions and millions of dollars supporting Republicans and preventing us from passing gun safety legislation.
But the NRA is the weakest it has been in a long time. Gun safety is a winning issue in swing districts, and in December, I led the fight in the Senate to secure $25 million in funding for research into the causes of gun violence and methods for prevention.
And there are ideas we could pass right now that would make our country safer — bills like universal background checks and banning assault weapons. I promised earlier this year, if I am re-elected, then we will pass comprehensive gun safety legislation in my next term. But I need to know you are with me in that fight.
We cannot allow the gun lobby to continue to put profits over people. Together, we will make the NRA stand for Not Relevant Anymore.
