*A Message from DC DMV Director Gabriel Robinson*
Director Robinson
Greetings DC! For many of us, summer means time spent outside -- whether it's strolling around the neighborhood, traveling around the country, abroad, or dodging the summer heat with a splash at the nearest community pool.
However you make your summer memorable this year, I encourage everyone to stay cool, look out for each other, and as always, be sure to follow all the rules of the road. Watch out for pedestrians and cyclists, particularly when approaching intersections, and never leave children or pets in hot cars. By taking these actions, we can all help achieve the Mayor's Vision Zero goal of seeing zero fatalities or serious injuries to travelers in the District because everyone deserves safer streets.
In this month's newsletter, we share safety tips on how to prevent your vehicle from theft, including what to do in the event your vehicle is stolen in DC. We also include tips for staying cool through the summer heat wave, along with hot car safety tips. Additionally, keep reading to learn more about how to subscribe to DMV's Spanish Newsletter!
As a reminder, your feedback is important to us. Please write us a letter [ [link removed] ] or join me for the DC DMV Live Chat, [ [link removed] ] held the first Thursday of each month. Our next online live chat is scheduled for* Thursday, August 7 at 12 p.m*. For a full hour, I will respond in real-time to any of your DMV related questions.
Thank you for reading this edition of our newsletter. Stay cool, DC!

20 is plenty
Vision Zero: 20 is Plenty
This month, the Vision Zero Office is reminding everyone that speeding always catches up to you. Whether it's a ticket, a stressful close call, or a tragedy that can't be undone, speeding comes with a cost.
Slowing down gives you time to react and keeps everyone safe on the road. Remember, 20 mph is plenty [ [link removed] ] on any street where people live, walk, bike or roll.

Vehicle Theft NHTSA
July is Vehicle Theft Prevention Month
This National Vehicle Theft Prevention [ [link removed] ]Month, take steps to ensure you avoid being the victim of a costly crime. Vehicle theft is a multi-billion-dollar industry. In 2022 alone, vehicle owners lost more than $8 billion in stolen property. Since summer proves to be the worst season for vehicle theft, we encourage drivers and travelers to use common sense when parking and exiting a vehicle. Take note of the tips below to help keep your vehicle safe:
* Take your vehicle's key; do not leave it in or on your vehicle.
* Close and lock all windows and doors when you park. Park in well-lit areas if possible.
* Never leave valuables in your vehicle, especially if they can be seen from outside the vehicle.
* Additional measure to protect your vehicle can be found on MPD’s page dedicated to vehicle theft prevention [ [link removed] ].
*What to Do If Your Car Was Stolen in DC?*
* *Contact the police [ [link removed] ]* - get an MPD police report. Ensure that the police report includes all necessary information such as your tag number; make, model and color of your vehicle; Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) and any identifying characteristics.
* *File a claim* with your insurance company as soon as possible.
* *Please note:* If you are the registered owner of the vehicle and you did not report it as stolen to the police, you may still be held responsible for any tickets issued.
* If you have reported your vehicle stolen and are still receiving tickets, please *Contest your ticket [ [link removed] ]* and be sure to include a copy of the police report, ensuring it contains all relevant details about the stolen vehicle.

Hot Car Safety: Always Check for Kids and Pets
The District is experiencing a wave of intense summer heat. As you journey throughout DC and beyond, make sure you're checking your vehicle at every stop for anyone or anything that should not sit in the heat without you present! "*Once you park, stop. Look. Lock.*" * *
*Ways to prevent hot car deaths: *
* Never leave a child or pet in a vehicle unattended. Rolling down windows or parking in the shade does little to change the vehicle's interior temperature.
* Check your entire vehicle, especially the back seat before locking your doors and walking away.
* Place a personal item like a bag in the back seat as a reminder to look before you lock. Place an item like a stuffed animal or toy in the passenger seat to remind you that a child or pet is in the back seat!
* Store your vehicle keys out of a child's reach and teach children that a vehicle is not a play area.
* If you see a child locked in a car alone, immediately call 911.

CDL
Drive to Thrive with a DC Commercial Driver License
Before you’re able to obtain a DC DMV Commercial Driver License (CDL), you must successfully complete and pass two trainings: Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) and Human Trafficking Awareness Training.
The ELDT regulations establish a Federal standard for training CDL applicants. Applicants must successfully complete this training before they will be permitted to take the CDL skills test or, in the case of the H endorsement, the knowledge test.
District law also requires all new drivers seeking a Commercial Learner Permit (CLP) and those looking to convert an out-of-state Commercial Driver License (CDL), to complete mandatory Human Trafficking Awareness training [ [link removed] ] before being issued a CLP or converting an out-of-state CDL. To learn more about becoming a CDL driver in the District, visit our website here [ [link removed] ].
