THIS WEEK’S TL;DR: level up ([link removed]) your producing; learn ([link removed]) to build strategic relationships; prepare ([link removed]) for leadership as a journalist of color; see ([link removed]) Tom Huang transform your edit; spot ([link removed]) investigative opportunities; uncover ([link removed]) hard-to-find facts.
------------------------------------------------------------
TV and associate producers: Friday is your last day to apply for the only Peak Producing ([link removed]) class this year – a course that will help you go from a deadline survivor to a newsroom leader.
Considering applying but want to hear from someone who's been there? See what your fellow producer alumni experienced:

🙋‍♀️ What are some important things you learned?
“A great producer needs to be a showcaser, have a unique view, lens on a story and news. Always ask yourself when covering a story or news event what it means..”
“Knowing that my perspective and ideas are important.”
“One of the most important things I learned was how to be a better leader in the newsroom. I also learned the importance of sharing thoughts and opinions in the newsroom even if I’m nervous about it at first.”
“To lean into irreversible changes happening in industry — also there are more than two sides to a story! Dive into the grey!”
“Instead of just doing reactive stories, go for the context — Why, how and what the story means! Think about the purpose of telling a story when doing crime reporting. Will it actually serve the community?”
“It’s all about the people. You are the answer to any issue and the person that can initiate change.”
🙋‍♀️ How will you use what you learned?
“I plan to lead, despite my title and duties.”
“I learned from my colleagues’ assessment that when I manage, I need to let my producer’s individual creativity thrive. I also need to trust my managers in the decisions they make. Understand these perspectives. Bervette encouraged me to not be afraid of having conversations despite my age and limited experience in the industry.”
“Try to have more inclusive voices in the stories I produce. Be a leader from within and to others.”
“I plan to look at everything in my life as a step in some new direction. Everything is progress, and every day is a new step. I also plan to take new considerations in crime coverage, and build leadership skills.”
🙋‍♀️ How did you feel about the training?
“It was an exceptional day to wrap up a life changing experience.”
“I am leaving here feeling extremely motivated. As I reflect on these three days, all the learning, discussions we’ve had, personal experiences we’ve shared I want to get back to my newsroom and be a better coworker, colleague and friend. This Poynter workshop helped me burst my bubble.”
“Today it really felt like journalism church.”

Read tips and reflections from Peak Producing ([link removed]) ’s lead instructor, Poynter’s Kerwin Speight:

🙋‍♀️ What are your top tips for new TV producers?

* A good story is a good story regardless of where you tell it. With the explosion of various platforms, there’s a place somewhere for your story.
* Be curious. Always ask why. The traditional methods of doing just about everything are changing. Ask why. Why are we doing this story and what’s not being told? Why don’t we explore this issue? Why did you make that decision? Why isn’t the ordinance relevant anymore?, etc.
* Go to your audience and report what’s impacting them. People communicate in different ways. Use all the tools available to listen and inform your journalism.
* Embrace technology. It’s changing the game and can be a huge help in news gathering, productivity and creativity.
* Lead from where you are…

🙋‍♀️ What is your vision for Peak Producing?
Peak Producing is designed to upskill producers who are making content decisions, creating content and ultimately informing audiences. With journalism and leadership at the core of this program, we’ll arm producers with necessary skills and tools to be impactful journalists regardless of the story, the medium or the audience.

If guidance by Kerwin and other award-winning journalists and the skills our alumni learned sound like the boost your career needs, don’t wait to apply ([link removed]) — Friday, July 18 is your final chance.
