Team –

Pride might look a little different this year, but as cries for justice ring across the country, standing in solidarity with our LGBTQ+ community – especially those that are Black, Brown, and Indigenous peoples – has never mattered more.

Last year, I introduced the first ever conversion therapy ban in the South and pushed state leaders to ban the practice statewide. This year, the Virginia General Assembly finally banned conversion therapy for minors and passed the Virginia Values Act, making Virginia the first Southern state to enact comprehensive non-discrimination protections for LGBTQ+ Americans. And just last week, the Supreme Court of the United States issued a historic ruling to protect LGBTQ+ employees in the workplace.

While we cannot gather together this year, we have a lot to celebrate this Pride month, and I am so proud of Virginia for the work we have accomplished. These are enormous and long overdue strides toward equality and justice, but we still have work to do. I will continue to make sure that our home is a safe haven for every person – no matter whom they love or how they identify.

Friend, we're not free until everyone is free. So this month, as many of us celebrate Pride safely from home, let's continue to work toward One Richmond: a place that is welcoming and inclusive to all.

Thank you, and Happy Pride!

Levar
