John,
Independence Day is a time to celebrate — but now is a time to reflect.
In Kansas City, we know that freedom isn’t just about fireworks. It’s about the right to safe housing. The right to walk your neighborhood without fear. The right to a good job, a working bus, a fair shot.
That’s why this past Independence Day, we recommitted to what justice means here — not just in words, but in action.
As we reflect on the past year alone:
- We’ve expanded protections for tenants and working families
- We’ve invested in public safety and in mental health resources
- We’ve led on transit equity with a zero-fare system that’s still moving our city
This isn’t about left or right. It’s about the dignity every Kansas Citian deserves.
I’m proud of what we’ve built — and even prouder of the community that’s pushing us to do more.
Let’s honor our independence by deepening our interdependence — and working for a Kansas City where no one is left behind.

Together, we rise.
