On the fourth of this month, Independence Day, we celebrated 249 years of American resolve and commitment to principle — a time to reflect on the values and ideals that generations of activists and leaders have fought to live up to: freedom, self-governance, and the pursuit of justice. Why are some moving us away from those core pillars of democracy?
At times like this, we must ask ourselves: What kind of America will we choose to be?
Right now, core pillars of our democracy are under attack – including a free press and educational institutions that teach independent and critical thinking. This isn’t isolated or random — this is an intentional effort by the far right to weaken the very systems we have in place to ensure the health of our democracy. They are dragging us toward authoritarianism. What’s happening now is NOT normal.
No matter how bad things get, there are always people fighting back for justice — right now, that’s what we’re doing at All On The Line. I’m proud of the work we’re doing to end gerrymandering, because it contributes to the polarization and dysfunction in our political system.
When there are relentless attacks on our democratic process and institutions, we have to keep fighting. For our fight to be strong, we need people by our side who care and are ready to take action — people like you.
In service,
Eric H. Holder, Jr.
82nd Attorney General of the United States
