The Animal Legal Defense Fund is engaged in litigation against Petland, alleging the national pet store chain has carried out a scheme to sell sick, puppy mill puppies at premium prices based on fraudulent health guarantees. Petland knows full well they’re selling puppies prone to illnesses and other health defects, due to their sourcing from cruel puppy mills, but the store certifies the animals to be healthy — as claimed by Petland’s veterinarians.

Petland has profited handsomely from their sham health certifications for puppy mill puppies. Meanwhile, their scheme has left a trail of defrauded consumers and deceased or sick puppies, with expensive veterinary bills.
Overbreeding and the crowded, unsanitary conditions at puppy mills put the puppies at risk of genetic conditions and deadly diseases. Additionally, many puppy mill dogs experience psychological problems throughout their lives from lack of early socialization and being separated from their mothers too young.
Puppy mills put the bottom line ahead of the health of the animals, while Petland profits at the expense of its consumers and the sick puppies it peddles to them. As you know, we’re fighting on multiple fronts to defeat the industry’s attempts to exploit animals, from passing legislation banning the sale of puppies sourced from puppy mills to using the power of the law to stop cruel and deceptive practices that endanger the lives of animals.
