John
Cindy and I had a great time rooting on the Oklahoma Wildcatters at PBR this weekend. I was able to offer the prayer for the victims of the recent flooding, our service members (it was Military Appreciation Night!), and the riders and athletes at this great event in OKC.
This week, the Senate will keep working on President Trump's "recissions" package, which is a fancy way of saying "spending reductions requested from the White House." It’s another way to reduce federal spending.
I have said for years that our national debt is a national security threat and that we must get federal spending in line with federal tax revenue to bring us back to balance. We currently owe more debt than our entire economy could cover in a year. That's terrible and a huge risk to our economy.
The President requested about $9.4 billion in recissions cuts, most of it from foreign aid. I have called out wasteful spending in foreign aid for years while supporting targeted spending that advances US national interests first and gives targeted support to our strategic defense allies around the world.
There is a reduction in the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, which was originally tasked with providing television programming for college-level curriculum and emergency information back in the day when we had four television stations and no internet. Now, PBS and NPR get less than 15% of their funding from the federal government, and there are thousands of ways to get local and emergency information in every corner of the state. Almost all of the money for PBS and NPR comes from local funding and private donations. This vote will mean they have to increase their own sponsorships and commercials to cover the last 10% of their funding.
We need to look at every area of the budget to start the long work of getting us back into balance. I will keep you posted on my work with President Trump to prioritize funding for things like a secure border, strong national defense, properly funded Medicare and Social Security, interstate roads and waterways, and safer skies.
Keep praying for the nation.
In God We Trust,
James Lankford
