*Governor Gordon Talks NEPA Reform, Wyoming’s Diversified Energy Portfolio, Trade Partnerships on Jake Nichols’ Morning Show*

CHEYENNE, Wyo. – Governor Mark Gordon joined Wyoming morning talk show host Jake Nichols (Cowboy State Daily Live Chat) [ [link removed] ] to discuss how his administration is working to advance fossil fuels, mining, renewables, rare earth minerals and energy technologies. The Governor discussed the significant benefits of reforming the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA); the Cowboy State’s burgeoning trade partnership with Japan and Taiwan; and Wyoming’s diversified energy portfolio.

Opening his segment with the Governor, Nichols called NEPA “super necessary” when established in the 1970s. “Today, NEPA has kind of twisted into something unrecognizable, but we shouldn’t just throw it out right? … Is it salvageable?" Nichols asked. Referencing the Alaska Pipeline, Governor Gordon affirmed NEPA’s value during earlier times.

In his editorial — "NEPA is Broken, but the States can Help Fix It" [ [link removed] ]— published this month in the "Washington Examiner", the Governor explained: “[NEPA’s] original concept, requiring federal agencies to identify significant environmental effects for major projects and consider public comments, was a step in the right direction. It helped improve projects and obviate disasters.

Governor Gordon and Nichols agreed that NEPA has become weaponized by advocacy groups seeking to thwart projects. “The salvage that I have recommended is that if the federal government can’t get it [analysis] done on time, let’s let the states do that,” Governor Gordon said.

The overhaul of NEPA, to expedite energy production, aligns with the Trump Administration’s prioritization of growing U.S. energy production to meet demand and bolster national security.

Governor Gordon led a trade delegation to Japan and Taiwan in April and subsequently, the first-ever Japan-Wyoming Trade Summit in Gillette in June.

Wyoming exports as much as 60% of the energy it produces to 22 states — many with environmental policies that Wyoming energy producers specifically meet. In addition to helping Japan and Taiwan adhere to their environmental goals, the import of Wyoming energy and products is valued by both countries as a means of reducing trade deficits with the United States.

“You have two nations that have carbon Net Zero policies by 2050. They both recognize they’ve got to have coal in the portfolio. They both recognize they’ve got to have oil and gas in the portfolio and they’re going to work on having renewables too,” said Governor Gordon, “But they are both islands with limited land mass and sea front so there’s only so much they can do. They also recognize, as we all do, that renewables are intermittent … so they want to bring more of our coal, our oil, and our gas [to their countries]. ”

Governor Gordon’s administration continues to advocate for and work to open West Coast ports — California, Oregon, and Washington — on behalf of Wyoming energy producers and trade partners Japan and Taiwan.
