And Still I Vote
Dear Advocate,
Thursday marks the 7th anniversary of the Supreme Court decision Shelby County v. Holder that gutted the Voting Rights Act of 1965 and upended decades of progress.
Since then, too many states and localities have reverted to discriminatory practices -- widespread polling place closures, lines with hours-long waits, a backlog of absentee ballot requests, machine breakdowns, and increased police presence. These barriers restrict the voting rights of Black, Brown, Native, and Asian American voters and voters with disabilities.
We can't let these barriers continue -- anywhere.
Tell your senators they must support the Health and Economic Recovery Omnibus Emergency Solutions (HEROES) Act, which includes $3.6 billion for elections. This will allow your state and local elected officials to ensure that voters aren't choosing between their health and democracy. It will also allow local election officials to have the funds they need to provide voting machines that work, decrease long lines, invest in vote by mail, and ensure that all voters have the right to a safe, accessible, and fair election.
