The Trump Regime’s Department of “Justice” centers anything but justice.

Hey team,

We knew long before Donald Trump became president (again 🙄) that it would mean bad news for voting freedom and our democracy.

We didn’t know just how aggressively and blatantly he’d go about it. In a direct attack on our fundamental freedoms, he has destroyed the Department of Justice’s Civil Rights Division, deliberately weakening the protection of our civil rights and enforcement of critical laws like the Voting Rights Act.

This leaves voters vulnerable to what Republican state legislators have been pushing across the South: voter purges, barriers to casting a ballot, discriminatory redistricting, and various other forms of voter suppression.

Make no mistake, this is intentional, and is a part of a broader effort by far-right extremists and the Trump Regime to retain power, restrict voting freedom, and further silence historically disenfranchised groups.

Fewer civil rights protections equate to more voter suppression, especially for Black and brown communities, as well as young and first-time voters. We can’t let this go without a fight. Lack of enforcement of civil rights protections isn’t the only thing that’s leaving voters vulnerable.

The Trump Regime has fully dropped critical lawsuits, including a challenge against a Georgia voter suppression law, SB 202. In 2021, Brian Kemp signed SB 202 into law, which includes various anti-voter measures:

  • Challenges to early voting rules
  • Strict voter ID requirements
  • Restricting who can assist voters who need help filling out their absentee ballots
  • Limiting drop boxes in every county
  • Barring people from handing out water and food for those waiting in line to vote
  • Restricting vote-by-mail

A whopping six lawsuits have been filed against SB 202, including the Department of Justice’s (DOJ's) original lawsuit from 2021. These cases, now consolidated and continuing without the DOJ, argue that the law violates the Voting Rights Act, the Civil Rights Act, and the Constitution. Before Trump, the DOJ was fighting to defend Black voters, arguing that the bill intended to “deny or abridge the right of Black Georgians to vote on account of race or color.”

Far-right extremists are using the same old playbook: Cling to power by restricting voting freedom, violating civil rights, and silencing the people.

We won’t go down without a fight. Sign the petition and show your support for restoring the Civil Rights Division at the Department of Justice.
