Since July 1, at least 57 people have been shot in Philadelphia. Last week, in the Pittsburgh suburb of Penn Hills, there were two unrelated shootings in two days. As a Philadelphian who just spent the last two weekends at playgrounds and the Wissahickon with my family, I’ve been horrified by the increased summer violence. Summer should be fun, not full of fear. But gun violence is harming all of us in Pennsylvania.
I joined NBC10 Philadelphia’s @Issue over the weekend to discuss what lawmakers and community members can do to address this crisis. I joined two other panelists, Founder and Executive Director of Mothers in Charge Dr. Dorothy Johnson-Speight, and Oronde McClain, a gun violence survivor who works for the Philadelphia Center for Gun Violence Reporting. The gun violence epidemic drives our decision making — Will that neighborhood event be safe? Should I let my kid play there? — and forces us to live more fearful, isolated lives. This is not an unsolvable crisis. Letting gun violence destroy our communities is a policy choice, and we need to keep demanding that our decision makers take action to keep us safe.
