 John, On July 1st, officers of the Helena Police Department pulled over Christopher Martinez Marvan — a Helena resident, husband, and father of four. Officers were searching for a specific suspect to arrest, but they quickly determined that Christopher was not the man they were looking for. Officers planned to write him a simple traffic citation. But then ICE arrived. Federal agents whisked Christopher away to the county detention center, even though a Helena police officer noted: “He’s being kidnapped right now.” Nearly two weeks later, no charges have been filed, yet Christopher still remains in custody indefinitely. John, arresting hardworking fathers does not make us safer. Tearing families apart does not make us safer. Allowing plainclothes federal officers to enforce Donald Trump’s cruel agenda with no oversight does not make us safer. These actions have no place in our state. But instead of speaking out against this injustice, Montana Republicans have gone silent, even as Trump’s hateful, anti-immigrant agenda rips directly through our state. The cruelty of the Trump administration has hit home, John. But Montana Republicans don’t care. Instead, they’re more than happy to go along with Trump’s depravity.
