Chandler here, with some Great Salt Lake news- the People’s Great Salt Lake Summit [[link removed]] is back on Saturday, August 23rd from 9 AM - 2 PM at SLCC’s Miller Campus (9750 S 300 W, Sandy, UT).
Let’s be clear: we are not on track for a healthy Great Salt Lake. Northern Utah may have dodged the Governor’s April 24th drought declaration, [[link removed]] but Great Salt Lake is just one hot summer away from falling back into what Dr. Bonnie Baxter calls “the scary zone”—the same danger zone we were in the year before the lake hit its historic low. Without significant intervention, we could be staring down another record low as soon as next year.
We know real change takes time, but this crisis is urgent. The lake remains at dangerously low levels, and we must keep up the momentum and call for greater action. We’re gathering passionate advocates, inspiring speakers, leading experts—and YOU—to organize, strategize, and plan the next steps to restore and protect Great Salt Lake.

I’ll be moderating a panel with GSL Commissioner Brian Steed, Jake Serago with the Division of Water Resources who’s working on the Great Salt Lake Basin Integrated Plan [[link removed]] , Ben Stireman with the Division of Forestry Fire and State Lands (working on the Great Salt Lake Comprehensive Management Plan), and BYU Scientist and Grow the Flow Director Ben Abbott. We’ll discuss the various plans for Great Salt Lake -- what they do and what they don't do; how we can collaborate effectively across agencies, water suppliers, and water users; how the public can support these efforts; what messages are needed most; where we go from here; and more.
We are so excited to bring many incredible voices together alongside partner organizations like Grow the Flow, the Center for Biological Diversity, Save Our Great Salt Lake, Utah Rivers Council, HEAL Utah, and Utah Physicians for a Healthy Environment. We can’t wait to see you there!
