Friend — You may remember a few months ago, I went down to visit Rümeysa Öztürk at an ICE detention center in Louisiana.

Rümeysa is a constituent of mine who was arrested by the Trump administration for exercising her right to free speech. She was denied due process, sent to indefinite detention, and slated for deportation.

I said from day one that people like Rümeysa are political prisoners of the Trump administration — and I was right.

A few weeks ago, Rümeysa was released from ICE custody upon a judge’s order. The judge stated that there were "very significant" claims that her First Amendment and due process rights were violated.

It was clear to all that despite committing no crimes or violations of her legal residency status, Rümeysa was detained because she expressed an opinion that Trump didn’t like.

Trump is acting like a dictator, but we are fighting back, and we are winning.

I have no doubt in my mind that the pressure that I put by going to Louisiana, and, more importantly, the pressure that you all put by continually speaking out against these injustices, are a big part of the reason why Rümeysa and Mahmoud Khalil are back home today.
