Dear John,


It’s official: Donald Trump will make a state visit to the UK from 17–19 September. King Charles will host the United States’ noxious President at Windsor Castle.


We won’t pretend this is welcome news. Trump’s corrupt, authoritarian, and toxic politics have no place here – and we’ll gladly stand in protest.


But here’s the silver lining. Over 41,000 people backed our petition urging Commons Speaker Sir Lindsay Hoyle to draw a red line at Trump addressing Parliament.


And it looks to have paid off: Trump will not be addressing the Commons.


It’s too early to pop the champagne, but with MPs not sitting during his visit – and a Lords address unlikely – we’re chalking this up as a significant victory for democracy and the tens of thousands of people who signed our petition.

That being said, this state visit is still completely unacceptable. During his first Presidency, and even more so in recent months, Donald Trump has proven to be the antithesis of everything Britain and the Labour government claim to stand for.


Let’s be absolutely clear. Donald Trump has:

  • Threatened to deport his political enemies

  • Enriched his friends on the public dime

  • Brutally crushed protests and militarised America’s streets

  • Detained and deported people without legal due process

  • Undermined and attempted to overturn legitimate election results

  • Pardoned insurrectionists, legitimised war criminals, and praised dictators

  • Fanned dangerous and racist conspiracy theories

  • Governed through fear and vengeance


There’s absolutely no reason a leader like that should come here and speak down to us.


That’s why Open Britain are proud members of the Stop Trump Coalition. That means our key focus now is making the march against Trump on Wednesday 17th September as big (and loud) as humanly possible.

Remember that Trump thrives off media spectacle, and we need everyone out in force to remind him and the world that Britain won’t stand for political vitriol or for tyranny.


Pulling off a mass mobilisation like this isn’t easy – or cheap. As part of the Stop Trump Coalition, we need to contribute as much as possible to send a  powerful message: Britain rejects Trump and Trumpism.
