WaPo Headline: Social Security pulls field office staff to answer overwhelmed phone line

Dear Friend,

This is exactly the kind of thing we were afraid of when Elon Musk’s DOGE laid off thousands of experienced, hardworking Social Security Administration workers.

And now it’s clear – the DOGE and Trump Administration cuts are making it harder for Americans to get the benefits they earned.

Social Security Commissioner Frank Bisignano’s shifting workers who process claims to answer the phone may make it look like customer service is improving – but that’s only going to make the length of time to process a claim take longer.

The bottom line is Congress needs to pass legislation to force this Administration to hire enough workers to staff the SSA.

Rep. John Larson (CT) has introduced a bill (H.R. 1876) that will keep field offices open to ensure that beneficiaries can still get in-person help if they need to.

Passing this legislation won't undo all of the damage that Elon Musk’s DOGE has done — but it’s a good place to start.

Will you help?

Please send a message to your representative demanding that they support the Keeping Our Field Offices Open Act (H.R. 1876).

Social Security celebrates its 90th anniversary next month – will you help us ensure it’s there for another 90 years?

Sincerely,

Richard Fiesta
