It’s been almost five months since the Trump administration began terminating much of the US government’s funding for global health, and our teams around the world are witnessing a humanitarian disaster. People who rely on humanitarian aid are scrambling to understand how to receive treatment amid wars, disease outbreaks, and other emergencies.

While Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) does not accept US government funding, we work alongside other organizations that do. Our independence means we can bear witness and speak out against this human-made disaster.

US aid cuts are shutting down lifesaving care. MALNUTRITION IN SOMALIA: Hundreds of children with malnutrition can’t access care. MSF-supported Bay Regional Hospital has received patients traveling as far as 120 miles for treatment.

OUTBREAKS IN SOUTH SUDAN: In the midst of escalating violence, a cholera outbreak is spreading, but the response has been highly impacted by closure of critical health services and mobile clinics. In Jonglei state, MSF set up a 100-bed cholera treatment unit to meet the growing need.

MIGRATION IN MEXICO: Inhumane immigration policies are putting tens of thousands of people in harm’s way. Along the migration route, MSF teams are providing basic medical and mental health care for people seeking safety

Before the sudden decision to cut almost all funding to humanitarian aid, the US was the leading supporter of global health and humanitarian programs—responsible for around 40 percent of all related funding. These investments have helped improve the health and well-being of communities around the globe, and totaled less than one percent of the annual federal budget.

As patients with critical health conditions struggle to find treatment, MSF remains committed to providing medical care and humanitarian support in more than 70 countries across the world. But no single organization can do this work on its own.

One thing is clear: The US government must restore funding for lifesaving humanitarian programs to ensure people have access to the care they need. Please join our call for an end to the attacks on humanitarian aid.
