Happy Shark Awareness Day, John!
To help you get to know—and appreciate—sharks, I want to share a few of my favorite facts about these awesome and often misunderstood creatures.
FACT #1: There are more than 500 shark species.
So much variety! Goblin sharks can be bright pink. Hammerhead sharks (like the one shown above) have eyes on the sides of their very wide heads. There’s even a cookie cutter shark, named for the round “cookie” bite marks it leaves on prey.
FACT #2: The smallest shark (the dwarf lantern shark) is about the size of a human hand.
Do you know how big the largest shark (the whale shark) can be? |

FACT #3: Sharks have been around for over 400 million years—long before dinosaurs!
Sharks have survived so much for so long, but today humans pose a huge threat. Up to 100 million sharks are killed every single year. Many are caught to meet the demand for their fins, which are made into soup. But many are accidentally caught in fishing gear.
Sharks are a critical part of the marine environment and must be protected. With you by our side, we'll keep conserving sharks and the oceans they call home. |
