Office of the Texas Governor, Governor's Committee on People with Disabilities
Celebrating 35 Years of the Americans with Disabilities Act: A Milestone for Inclusion in Texas

This year marks the 35th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), a landmark civil rights law signed on July 26, 1990, by President George H. W. Bush. The ADA prohibits discrimination against individuals with disabilities in all areas of public life. From employment and education to transportation and public accommodations, the ADA has transformed our communities, ensuring people with disabilities have the same rights and opportunities as everyone else.

In Governor Abbott’s proclamation he expressed, “Over the past three and a half decades, the ADA has advanced inclusion efforts like accessible transportation, inclusive education, and employment protections, which has contributed significantly to greater independence and a flourishing society.”

The Governor’s Committee on People with Disabilities (GCPD) plays a key role in advancing the spirit of the ADA in our state. Through public policy work, community outreach, and education, the GCPD supports efforts to make Texas a state where all people—regardless of ability—can live, work, and thrive.

Texas has seen significant progress since the ADA’s passage. From accessible voting and public transportation initiatives to employment protections, communities across the state are embracing accessibility not just as a legal requirement, but as a shared value.

To recognize the 35th anniversary of this transformative law, we honor the advocates, allies, and leaders, many right here in Texas, who have worked tirelessly to break down barriers and open doors. Their dedication continues to make our state more accessible, inclusive, and welcoming for everyone.
