If Democrats are going to pass the kind of legislation we need to undo the damage done by Donald Trump, we need to win in places Democrats haven't won in a long time.
That's why I go to places like South Carolina, Tennessee, Mississippi and more. That's why I've helped raise hundreds of thousands of dollars for red state Democratic parties.
But every time I get there some Republican like Nancy Mace will say something dumb like "don't California my South Carolina."
So let's get the record straight. California has:
- lower homicide rates
- lower gun death rates
- lower taxes for working families
- lower maternal mortality rates
- higher GDP
- higher wages
- higher life expectancy
- free pre-kindergarten
- free community college
- free school meals
- And total domination in every major industry.
These red state authoritarian apologists love to create some caricature of California to obscure the fact they have created an environment where their people have worse health, education and economic outcomes than most "blue states" in America.
That's the message we have to get out there.
