Dear John,

Our next Local Peace Economy gathering is on Wednesday, July 16th (8 pm ET/5 pm PT). The topic for the evening is on the nature of reciprocity. Reciprocity has been core to the thriving of cultures for millennium.  We have touched on the idea of reciprocity in gatherings before. Genevieve Vaughan shared with us how the war economy made exchanges transactional rather than gift based.

We are fortunate to have Sabrina Meherally joining us for this meeting. She wrote a beautiful article on Medium about "Reciprocity as Relational Responsibility" that describes it as a pivot we must take in order to properly understand reciprocal relationships. She writes, "Reciprocity, in its truest form, isn’t just about payment. It’s about responsibility. It’s about what happens after the conversation ends, after the data is collected, after the story is shared in trust. It’s about what we carry forward and how we live in relation to those who’ve gifted their knowledge."

Sabrina is the founder of Pause + Effect, where she "supports others to tend to their own becoming as they compost inherited ways of being, and shape-shift toward the futures we long for." As those interested in cultivating a Local Peace Economy, we are all shape-shifting toward a longed for future as well. Please RSVP here to join us Wednesday as we welcome Sabrina to our gathering for this conversation.

If you missed our conversation last week with Laurel Mellin, we have heard from many of you how helpful the tools are she discussed in moving through the grief and anxiety that is layered on us each day.

As is our habit, we will have breakouts toward the end of the call. Breakouts will not be timed, allowing for extended connections and ample time for conversation.

TAKE ACTION! Airbnb has been identified as a company profiting off the illegal settlements in Palestine. Airbnb lists 350 properties in illegal Israeli settlements on stolen Palestinian land in 2025. Sign our petition to let Airbnb know that perpetuating Israel’s violations of international law is reprehensible. Airbnb has previously taken down listings on illegal settlements in 2018 and we can pressure them to do it again!

Also, we have new keffiyeh’s in our store from the West Bank.

We hope to see you this Wednesday!

P.S.  Our monthly writing workshop has been ongoing for a almost a year now. There's space for more, if you are interested in joining the call.
Here is a recent poem by Joy Johnson that was read to the group:
Competition to Interdependence:  life
It’s not the fittest but the gene essays
at survival - - and how at that? - - alone?
I think not. Life itself an expression
of cooperation whose cell it takes
already myriad mechanism
to assure sublime its gene is passed on.
Likewise, out here, macro, what makes us think
we’re exempt. Becoming real entails one
look around, admit connection. Succinct:
it takes a planet.  We pay for schism
in thought and action with our brethren, un-
aware in the most part what transgression,
its magnitude, we manifest to play
at being vertical, dominant, apart.
