Friends,

No more masks. No more secrecy. No more rogue ICE operations.

I recently introduced legislation banning ICE and DHS agents from wearing masks to hide their identity, and requiring them to publicly display their agency and name or badge number.

It’s called the VISIBLE Act, and it’s got three main points:

Immigration enforcement officers will be required to display “clearly legible identification”, including their agency and either their name or badge number.

They will be prevented from wearing masks, balaclavas, or other face coverings used purely to hide their identity.

It also requires that DHS set up a system to make sure its officers are complying.

Right now under the Trump administration’s mass deportation agenda, people have no way of knowing whether or not they’re interacting with a real government official, and have no way to hold those officials accountable for abuses of power.

We’re already seeing it here in California, where immigration enforcement — many of whom did not have any identification — have arrested over 1,000 people for deportation.

They’re running kids out of parks in armored vehicles and tactical gear, and shoving people into unmarked cars. People are terrified.

Enough. ICE and DHS’s habit of using unidentified and plainclothes officers as well as using masks or balaclavas to hide their identities only escalates tensions and shields federal agents from basic accountability.

So I’ve introduced the VISIBLE Act along with my colleague Cory Booker. But what we are trying to do now is demonstrate to our colleagues that there is overwhelming support for this bill so we can get it passed.

Can you please add your name here to say you support the VISIBLE Act?
