Dear Jack,
It seems like only yesterday we were starting this year’s law-making session, and now, with summer fully underway, we find ourselves preparing for a Special Session. As we hit this mid-year mark, we have some updates for you.
Free Meal Program for Loudoun County Public Schools Students
Loudoun County Public Schools (“LCPS”) is providing free meals this summer for students ages 18 and younger at fourteen locations throughout Loudoun County, with several in House District 27. The Summer Food Service Program provides funding for free meals to children during the summer months to ensure children retain access to nutritious meals when school is not in session. For important information about the summer meals program for this year and a list of all summer meal locations, please click the button below.

The Worst of Winsome Tour

Standing with Senator Salim and advocates!
Last week, community leaders came together to speak about why Winsome Earle-Sears is a bad choice for Virginia. Earle-Sears has an extensive record that’s out of touch with Virginians, and if she has the chance, she’ll enact an extreme agenda that will leave Virginians’ rights open to attacks. She shamelessly parrots Trump’s rhetoric, using her tie-breaking vote to attack marriage equality and women’s healthcare, and cheering on the chaos in D.C. despite the harm to families across Virginia.
Thousands of Virginians have faced layoffs this year. As I meet with my constituents, I hear repeatedly how devastating these layoffs have been for their families. They relay the fear and anxiety as they face late career uncertainty - some still waiting to find out if they will keep their jobs, and others looking for new employment. More than 30% of these workers are veterans who sacrificed years of their lives to defend our country. Now, these veteran service members are left without the security they earned and deserve.
Moreover, these thousands of job losses impact all of the Commonwealth with larger economic impacts and ripple effects. Restaurants are less busy, and small businesses are losing customers. Virginians are feeling economic uncertainty across the Commonwealth, and the bad news is just beginning. Virginia is expected to lose 32,000 more jobs this year. The unemployment rate has increased for the past 5 months – the longest stretch since the 2008 recession. Virginians deserve a leader who will fight for the Commonwealth now, not another politician with a reactionary and harmful agenda.
That’s why I am proud to support our Democratic ticket and champion policies aimed at fixing the most pressing issues in Virginia, like providing a world-class education for our children, creating economic opportunity, and strengthening public safety. Abigail Spanberger, Ghazala Hashmi, and Jay Jones have spent their lives devoted to public service and creating a Virginia that works for us. When we elect them, we can count on leadership that is focused on addressing the biggest problems facing our Commonwealth, not waging a cultural war to score political points.
Virginia Faces The Longest Unemployment Surge Since The Great Recession
Unemployment in Virginia has steadily increased since the beginning of the year. May’s unemployment numbers rose to 3.4% which means that Virginia has the largest number of unemployed workers since August 2021. The Commonwealth’s total labor force is down 11,500 jobs compared with last May, with many of those lost jobs in or adjacent to the federal government.
The rise in unemployment reflects cuts in federal jobs and funding for critical programs. Although the job layoffs are concentrated in Northern Virginia, the tax revenue loss impacts the entire Commonwealth. Moreover, with the new federal budget's reductions to Medicaid, we expect to see a reversion to more individuals using emergency services in place of preventive care, creating delay times for those in need of the same care and driving up costs for taxpayers who will foot the bill. The cuts will also cause hospitals that rely on these funds to close. The curtailing of food benefits will leave hundreds of thousands of Virginia children without aid, which localities may try to cover, again putting strain on the individual Virginia taxpayer.
State lawmakers are not waiting to act. We are meeting with community leaders, policy experts, and constituents on topics including healthcare, education, and economic development to develop strategies aimed at addressing these trends. In the coming weeks, the Speaker will call a Special Session to address the cuts in Medicaid, food benefits, and other government services.
It is evident that the reckless and indiscriminate cuts to the federal workforce are to blame for many of the financial problems Virginia is facing. When Republicans like Winsome Sears cheer on Trump’s cuts, they demonstrate that they are out of touch with the needs of Virginia’s families. Our nation’s long-term economic health is also at stake. Trump’s budget bill would add $3.3 trillion to our national debt. This November, we can select a leader who will work hard for Virginia and work to protect Virginia families from disastrous policy proposals.

Intern Spotlight: Samarth!

Samarth with our Lieutenant Governor candidate Senator Ghazala Hashmi!
Samarth Chenumolu is a rising sophomore at Briar Woods High School in Ashburn, Virginia. He became interested in government through his experiences with policy debate and quickly realized how much he enjoyed digging into real-world issues that affect everyday people. Samarth has previously interned with Delegate Patrick Hope and Delegate Marty Martinez, where he gained hands-on experience with voter outreach, legislative research, and community-focused projects. He is especially passionate about improving people's connections to their local government and studying how local policies can drive actual, impactful change. Outside of work, Samarth enjoys playing basketball with friends, keeping up with the NFL season, and exploring new places to eat around Northern Virginia.

How My Office Can Help
Navigating state agencies can be confusing and difficult at times. As the delegate for House District 27, I can help you communicate with state agencies such as the Virginia Employment Commission, Departments of Taxation, Social Services, Transportation, and more! I can also submit inquiries with those agencies on your behalf. There are limits to what I can do, however. For example, I am unable to expedite cases or force state agencies to favor your inquiry, provide legal advice or recommend a specific attorney, intervene with judicial issues, overturn decisions, or be involved with matters between private businesses.
Whether you require my office’s assistance, want to bring an issue to my attention or invite me to a community event, please reach out! If there is any way I can assist you, please reach out here: [link removed] [[link removed]]
