In the early morning hours, without warning, airstrikes tore through Old Fangak, a remote corner of South Sudan. The bombs hit the only hospital serving over 40,000 people. Lives were lost. More were injured. The building was destroyed. But the damage goes far beyond the rubble. This hospital was a critical referral point for UNFPA’s mobile teams delivering emergency maternal care. It was a place where pregnant women received skilled support, survivors of sexual violence could access critical services, and girls found shelter and care.
Now, all of that is gone. “I used to walk two days to reach the hospital,” one woman said. “Now, I don’t know where to go.” In moments like these, our teams rush to do what we can — evacuate staff, help women and girls, and begin restoring care. This is made possible by caring supporters like you.
Health facilities across the region are being targeted in conflict. This is part of a dangerous trend of destroying essential care services. We cannot let this become the new normal, especially in a country where 2.4 million women of reproductive age out of 9.3 million are in need of humanitarian assistance. And it’s not just South Sudan. In the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), UNFPA Safe Spaces are the only refuge for countless women and girls living with the daily threat of sexual violence and armed conflict. These sanctuaries provide access to essential services such as psychosocial support, healthcare, and legal assistance.
