John,
After Donald Trump slashed nearly 600 positions at the National Weather Service and over 1,000 from NOAA, Americans are already paying the price.
During this year’s deadly floods in Texas, a critical meteorologist role, cut by the Trump administration, was vacant as floodwaters surged. Warnings went out late, coordination faltered, and people died.
Trump and his far-right cronies are gutting public services while climate disasters rage. He’s slashing FEMA by 20%, axing climate resilience roles, and firing experts dedicated to equity and disaster relief. The result is slower responses, weaker preparation, and communities left to fend for themselves.
FEMA, NOAA, and the National Weather Service aren’t luxuries. Their staff are the reason we know when to evacuate, how to prepare, and where help is coming from. Cutting them is as reckless as defunding fire departments during wildfire season.
As hurricane season ramps up, tell Congress to fully fund FEMA, NOAA, and NWS and make sure no community is left behind.
Right now, we’re seeing the early stages of a slow-motion disaster. Experts are being removed, while budgets are being gutted and essential services are hollowed out.
The ones who suffer most are the same communities hit hardest by climate change, Black, brown, rural, and working-class neighborhoods.
These agencies don’t just respond to hurricanes and floods. They warn about heat waves, track wildfires, coordinate with first responders, and protect our nation’s infrastructure. Every staffing cut is a gamble with lives.
There’s no excuse. The technology and personnel exist. The only thing missing is the political will. That’s where you come in. Congress needs to hear from us, loud and clear, that working people won’t stand by while public safety is sacrificed for MAGA politics.
We can’t wait until the next disaster to take action. Tell Congress to restore full staffing at FEMA, NOAA, and the National Weather Service now.
Let’s fight for the public services that save lives.
