Further easing of coronavirus restrictions

Today the Government announced a major change in its social distancing guidelines - from 4th July the new "one metre plus" rule for all venues, including shops, restaurants, schools, offices, and parks will come into effect. We cautiously welcome this news in Nottingham.

As more local businesses and other venues will be able to reopen or increase their service offering, we will be working with local partners to ensure this can be done safely. This announcement will also mean its possible to reopen more council services. Teams across the council are finalising plans on the safe delivery of additional services which we will announce in due course. Instances of the virus remain relatively low in Nottingham, which is testament to the sensible approach most people have taken to help control the virus locally. However, we are not complacent and recognise that the virus can have a devastating effect on people and their families. If we all remain cautious and comply with Government guidance, we can start to enjoy the increased freedoms this change in social distancing guidance brings.

*Testing now more widely available *

Im really pleased to see that community testing is now being rolled out more widely - this will help control and contain local outbreaks. The Department of Health and Social Care which oversees testing has just released thousands of new bookings for home testing kits and regional testing sites are available. Nottinghams site is at the Motorpoint Arena car park behind the BBC building off London Road. Symptoms to look out for are a high temperature, a new, persistent cough and loss or change in sense of smell or taste. If you or a family member do become unwell and suspect you may have the virus, please visit Public Health England: Coronavirus [ [link removed] ] for advice on what do, looking after yourself and how to get a test.

With temperatures set to soar over the next few days alongside the further lifting of restrictions, we are all looking forward to getting outside a bit more and starting to enjoy our summer. For many, this will mean a trip to one of the citys beautiful parks, which have been incredibly popular right through lockdown for people to enjoy the beautiful plants, trees and wildlife while getting some much-needed fresh air and exercise.

We are looking forward to welcoming many more visitors over the next few days but ask that to help everybody have a great day out, a bit of planning is undertaken before setting off. Issues such as littering have put pressure on staff teams and mean the site is not as pleasant for other visitors.

Its fine to come and picnic in our parks, but do make sure litter is properly disposed of or taken away. Visitors should still be observing social distancing at all times, and washing hands regularly or using antibacterial gel. Also, prepare for the sun. Try to stay in the shade, regularly apply sunscreen and bring plenty of water for the whole family and any pets.
