I would tell my players this all the time.

Hi John,

There’s a line I used to say to my students and players almost every day: Hard work beats talent when talent doesn't work hard.

I’ve repeated that phrase on the sidelines, in classrooms, and in tough moments in my own life. It’s more than a mantra. It's how I’ve lived. Because I wasn’t supposed to run for Congress. I didn’t come from a political family. I’m a teacher, a basketball coach, and a dad from Staten Island.

But I’ve seen firsthand what happens when someone shows up and does the work. When they lead with heart, and keep going when it’s hard.

That’s what this campaign is all about.

We just closed the books on a major fundraising deadline, and thanks to this grassroots team, we hit our goal. But summer is here, and we are heading into one of the toughest stretches of the year to raise money. If we’re going to flip this seat and bring real representation to NY-11, we have to keep working harder than ever.

So I’m asking you directly: Will you chip in today to help us keep up the pressure and prove that hard work still wins?
