The budget bill Donald Trump just signed into law is devastating—for working families, for seniors, and for anyone who believes government should serve the people.
It cuts essential programs, threatens Maine’s economy, and hands even more power to the wealthy and well-connected. I’m worried about both the state of Maine and the state of our country as this bill goes into effect.

Here’s what you need to know about Trump’s budget bill:
| 🚨 It makes health care more expensive and harder to access. 31,000 Mainers will lose their MaineCare coverage in the first year, insurance premiums will rise by an average of around $1,200, thousands will lose coverage due to premium increases, and rural hospitals may be forced to close.

| 🚨 It gives tax cuts to the top 1%. The budget bill gives $1 trillion in tax cuts to the ultra-wealthy top 1% of income earners. Trump is only too happy to help out his ultra-rich friends while leaving hard-working low-income and middle-class Americans behind.

| 🚨 It cuts clean energy programs in favor of more bailouts for fossil fuel companies, raising Mainers energy bills and making our fight against climate change more difficult.

| 🚨 It adds to the national deficit. This legislation adds $3.9 trillion to the national debt. GOP hypocrisy at its finest.

Bottom line: this budget is bad for Maine.
I’ve served on the school board and as Speaker of the House. I’ve spent my career fighting for Maine people—building coalitions, taking actions that put our communities first while standing up to bad deals like this Republican budget bill.
With so much on the line, it’s critical that Maine’s next governor has what it takes to stand up to Trump and advance solutions that will protect Mainer people and create a bright future for Maine.
