”Rent is going up. If that’s an issue, we understand if you need to move.”
John, if you’re a renter, chances are you've probably heard that more than once from your landlord before. Thankfully, Run for Something candidates are working to change that.
Thanks to Chi Ossé — a renter, RFS alum and New York City councilmember — New York just took a huge step toward fairer renting with the passage of the FARE Act.
This new law means landlords — not renters — will now be required to pay broker fees in NYC.
This is what happens when Run for Something candidates get elected: No more surprise bills for thousands of dollars. No more brokers charging for tours you didn’t ask for. And no more barriers between working people and a place to live.
But our work is far from over, John. As housing costs skyrocket and federal programs face cuts, local governments are on the front lines of this crisis.
That’s why we’re working to elect even more leaders like Chi — renters, organizers, working-class folks — who understand what their communities need because they’ve lived it, too.
Successes like the FARE Act are just the beginning, John. Let’s keep the wins coming.
